The rosie project

Author – Graeme Simsion

Text type – novel

Date read – May 2019

The Rosie Project is a novel about a man named ‘Don Tillman’,. Don decides to create ” The Wife Project”, which is a scientific test, that matches the perfect partner, based on your personality. He meets the world’s most incompatible woman which little did he know that it would completely flipped his life upside down.

The character I found the most interesting was Don, because 2.3% of people in the world who have this mental disorder he is one of those people. Because of this disorder his life is super organized, He takes time out of his day to make a schedule for him self for the day. ” I scheduled 94 minutes to clean the bathroom”, this tells the reader that he has a certain time set in the day to do things. This meant he is a super organised person, which is society we see these people as “clean freaks”, and it is also seen as a OCD disorder. There are 4 types of OCD such as contamination and washing, doubts about accidental harm and checking, arranging and symmetry and thoughts and mental rituals. Contamination and washing is the type of OCD Don has, I could personally relate to this because. Sometimes I like things to be extra tidy and clean or in order, especially when it comes my bedroom. I physically can’t have a single thing on my bedroom floor, and if there is something I pick it up and put it where it’s supposed to go.

Messages I took away from away from this novel is that, Don struggles to make friends, ” I have never found it easy to make friends”. This tells the reader that he finds making new friends challenging, I could personally relate to this because throughout my whole childhood, I always found it hard to make friends. because I was so “different” compared to the others. This was always a struggle for me as I always felt alone, I would dread games that required to be put into teams for. Because I was always the last one to get picked, no one liked me. Another message I took from the novel is that Don comparing woman to an ‘animal kingdom’ In society men overpower woman because of their size and shape, this is not correct because men naturally have a masculine look to them, so they are looked at in a different way. That is where the label ” animal kingdom ” comes from because a womans size and shape is different to men Don has used this ‘label’ effectively to make the readers realise that woman aren’t like men.

Challenges that Don had to face was not matching with the right person until he met rosie, they are completely different which in my opinion is good because you don’t want be exactly the same because otherwise it makes your relationship uninteresting. Don also struggled making friends easily “i’ve never found it easy to make friends” this is because he isn’t a very social person which makes making friends more difficult.

‘The Rosie Project’ is a appropriate title of this novel because the title suggest the the story is about it when Don decided to make a test that matches you with someone who your most compatible with it was called ‘The Wife Project’ Don didn’t keep this name because he found a woman, by the name of Rosie he found her on his app

I would recommend this novel to people who can relate to Don because it would make them feel better about themselves of not being the only one who has OCD people aged between 18 and 25 i would recommend this novel to because this is age when people develop OCD I would personally recommend this story to one of my close friends who has OCD and can relate to Don

Hi Katey,

Look to add a few more reflections in this entry about society and how people like to judge or make assumptions about people. Expand on statements that you’ve already made to add greater strength to your writings.
